The public commitment seeks to safeguard the quality of public debate and ensure the 2025 presidential and parliamentary elections are free from disinformation, hate speech, and political violence
In an effort to defend freedom of expression with ethical responsibility, prevent disinformation and hate speech, and guarantee trustworthy democratic processes in the 2025 elections in Chile, the Governing Board signed the Ethical Commitment for the Integrity of Electoral Information.
The agreement was promoted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) office and also signed by the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Chile, the Chilean Electoral Service (Servel), the National Television Association (Anatel), the National Television Council (CNTV), the Ciudadanía Inteligente Foundation, Google, Meta, TikTok, X, the Mala Espina verification initiative, and the Data Observatory of the Adolfo Ibáñez University (UAI).
The signing took place within the framework of the seminar “Elections 2025: Comprehensive Information, Respectful Debate, and Violence-Free Participation,” organized by Servel and UNDP. The event brought together public agencies, civil society, academia, digital platforms, fact-checkers, and media outlets in a multi-stakeholder dialogue space.
This process is linked to the work of the Governance Board for the Integrity of Information in Electoral Processes, created in 2024 and formally presented last August.
Pamela Figueroa, president of Servel’s Board of Directors, stated that “this year this alliance is particularly necessary and relevant” in light of the presidential and parliamentary elections, which “demand that this commitment to the integrity of information be renewed and strengthened.” “It is imperative that we work together, not only to guarantee transparent elections, but also processes free of misinformation, hate, and violence,” she added.
For her part, Valentina Salas, Head of Governance at UNDP Chile, highlighted the importance of the Governance Roundtable as “a space where we generate strategic alliances with digital platforms, traditional media, civil society, and fact-checkers to strengthen information integrity.”
Salas maintained that it is essential that all these efforts continue beyond these elections, “since the best way to prevent information pollution is to maintain sustained work during non-election periods.”
